Memorials at Sea FAQ
Helpful information about Memorials at Sea with Scatter Ashes NC, departing from Southport and Oak Island, North Carolina.
Most Memorials at Sea depart from Morningstar Marina in Southport NC. The marina offers convenient parking, clean restroom facilities, and is located close to local restaurants for families who wish to gather before or after the service.
We can also arrange pickup from St. James, Bald Head Island, Oak Island, or a private dock when available. Final meeting details are discussed in advance to ensure a smooth and comfortable arrival for everyone attending.
For safety and Coast Guard regulations, our vessel has a strict 6 passenger capacity. Every person on board counts toward this 6-passenger limit — including children and infants, regardless of age.
We are happy to discuss the best arrangement for your group and can help you determine whether an attended or blended memorial service would best accommodate your family’s needs.
If you have questions about your specific group size, please reach out so we can guide you accordingly.
You don’t need to bring a death certificate — it’s not required for any of our Memorials at Sea. You are welcome to bring personal items that help honor your loved one, such as:
Photos or keepsakes
Favorite foods or beverages
Song selections to play through our Bluetooth speaker
We provide everything else you may need for a smooth and meaningful ceremony, including:
Tissues
Cooler with ice and cups
Tools to open any urn
Flowers
Knee bench for comfort
Bamboo urns (available upon request)
Our goal is to make the day as thoughtful and stress-free as possible, so you can focus on remembering and celebrating your loved one.
Not necessarily — but we intentionally allow up to three hours so no one ever feels rushed.
Traveling three nautical miles offshore, conducting the flower and ash release, and returning to shore typically takes about an hour and a half under normal conditions. The remaining time is simply space — space to reflect, share stories, pray, play music, or quietly take in the water.
Some families prefer a shorter, simple ceremony. Others choose to take their time and linger in the moment. You may also use the remaining time to ride along the coastline before returning.
If you feel your group may need additional time beyond the standard window, extended time can be arranged in advance.
Our goal is not to watch the clock — it is to create an experience that feels unhurried and meaningful.
We understand that trust is especially important when a family is not physically present. Every unattended memorial is handled with the same care and reverence as an attended service.
Arrangements begin with a personal handoff whenever possible. If shipping is preferred, we accept remains via USPS and provide guidance to ensure everything is sent properly. Once received, we confirm arrival immediately so you know your loved one is safely in our care.
We typically complete the memorial within two weeks, depending on weather and scheduling. We monitor conditions closely to ensure the service is conducted in calm and respectful seas.
The day before the scattering, we will message you with confirmation. On the day of the memorial, we send a message and photo once we are aboard the vessel and another message when the service has been completed.
Afterward, our crew gathers photographs and video footage of the ceremony. These are thoughtfully compiled and shared with you so you may witness the moment in your own time. We also provide the exact offshore coordinates where the ashes were released, offering a lasting place of remembrance.

In accordance with federal regulations, ashes are respectfully scattered at least three nautical miles offshore. This ensures full compliance while providing a peaceful and open setting for the memorial.
If anyone in your group is uncomfortable traveling three miles offshore, our Blended Memorial Service may be a thoughtful alternative. This option allows family and friends to gather inshore for a meaningful flower tribute, while the final ash scattering is completed privately offshore by our captain and crew.
Life jackets are available for all guests and may be worn at any time for added comfort. While they are not required for anyone over the age of 12, we are always happy to provide them to anyone who prefers the extra reassurance.
Weather is one of the most common concerns families have, and we take it very seriously. Your comfort and safety are always our priority.
We closely monitor marine forecasts in the days leading up to your memorial service. If conditions appear questionable, we will proactively reach out to begin discussing options rather than waiting until the last moment. Our goal is to avoid rescheduling whenever possible, but in the case of storms or unsafe sea conditions, we will work with you to select an alternate date and time that feels right for your family.
In some situations, families have chosen to proceed with a meaningful inshore flower tribute while postponing the offshore ash scattering. When weather conditions improved, Captain Darren and I respectfully completed the ash scattering privately (unattended) three nautical miles offshore, ensuring full compliance and dignity. This option allows the family to gather together as planned, without feeling rushed or disrupted by weather concerns.
Every situation is handled with care and flexibility. We will guide you through the options and communicate clearly so you feel supported and informed every step of the way.
Yes. We respectfully accommodate a variety of religious and spiritual traditions, including Hindu and other cultural rites. Families are welcome to incorporate prayer, readings, or ceremonial elements.
Fresh flowers are included in the price and are often a meaningful part of the ceremony. We coordinate in advance regarding preferred flower types or colors whenever possible.
Federal guidelines require that any items placed in the water be fully biodegradable and environmentally safe. We are happy to discuss specific items beforehand to ensure that personal traditions are honored while remaining in full compliance with regulations.
Please call us or complete the planning form as soon you are interested so we can coordinate your ideal date with our availability. For short notice, we typically ask for at least three days’ notice, based on availability. Because we operate personally and do not outsource services, scheduling depends on both weather conditions and our calendar.
Most memorials are scheduled during two primary timeframes:
9:00 AM – 12:00 PM or 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM
However, we understand that some families prefer a sunrise or sunset memorial for personal or symbolic reasons. When possible, we are happy to accommodate alternate times of day. We encourage you to reach out as soon as you begin considering a date so we can discuss availability and options.
For attended memorials, the ceremony is guided by you and your family. Many families choose to share a few words, read a passage, play a meaningful song, or simply take a quiet moment together as the ashes and flowers are released. We provide the setting and gentle guidance if needed, but the flow of the service is entirely up to you.
For unattended memorials, Captain Darren and the crew of 5 More Minutes Charters will carry out the ceremony on your behalf. If you provide a message, prayer, or passage, it will be respectfully read during the release. If you prefer, we are also happy to select a simple prayer or meaningful passage to accompany the ash scattering at sea.
Yes, we are pet-friendly and understand that pets are often an important part of the family. Well-behaved pets are welcome to attend the memorial service.
You may even be greeted by Miss Angie, our gentle four-legged companion, who is often nearby. She has a quiet way of knowing when to stay close and when to give space, offering calm comfort simply by being present.
If you plan to bring a pet, please let us know in advance so we can ensure everyone’s comfort and safety on board.
